🔧 GEARBOX REPAIR LESSON: WHY GEARS SLIP AND HOW TO DIAGNOSE IT

One of the most common gearbox complaints drivers bring to a workshop is gear slipping.
The vehicle goes into gear, but while driving it suddenly jumps out or feels like it’s not holding properly. Many people think the gearbox is completely damaged, but that is not always true.

Let’s break this down in a simple way.

What is gear slipping?

Gear slipping happens when the gearbox fails to stay engaged in the selected gear. This can occur during acceleration, uphill driving, or when the engine is under load.

Common causes of gear slipping:

1️⃣ Worn clutch (Manual gearbox)
If the clutch is worn, it cannot transfer power properly. This causes slipping, especially in higher gears.

2️⃣ Low or dirty gearbox oil
Gearbox oil lubricates and protects internal components.
Low oil or dirty oil leads to poor gear engagement and internal wear.

3️⃣ Worn synchronizers
Synchronizers help gears match speed during shifting.
When worn, gears may not fully engage and can slip out.

4️⃣ Damaged gear teeth
Broken or worn gear teeth cannot lock properly, causing the gear to disengage while driving.

5️⃣ Linkage or selector problems
Sometimes the gearbox is fine, but the gear linkage is misadjusted or worn, preventing full engagement.

Important diagnostic tip:

Do not rush to remove the gearbox immediately.
First check: ✔ Clutch condition
✔ Gearbox oil level and quality
✔ Gear linkage adjustment

Many gearbox problems start small and become expensive only because they are ignored.

Final advice:

Early diagnosis saves money.
If a vehicle shows signs of gear slipping, it should be checked immediately before serious internal damage occurs.
